An Artistic Companion to the Film American Graveyard Curated by Lazarus Nazario

Black Cherry Lane: Presence is a multidisciplinary exhibition that reimagines the lost community of Cherry Lane Cemetery— a historic former African-American burial ground on Staten Island that was paved over into a strip mall. The location of the remains is unknown.

Through contemporary artists, descendant voices, and community engagement, this exhibition, curated by painter Lazarus Nazario, will change people’s understanding of how Black history unfolded on Staten Island. By giving presence to this lost community we are reclaiming these once-forgotten voices.

Black Cherry Lane: Presence will be held at Empire Outlets, Staten Island, NY in October 2026 and will include a range of public programs designed to engage visitors.
