Skull- Painting #79
8 x 8 in. Oil on board 3/28/2016
I thought I’d paint a skull today, however I had wanted to paint an adorned one. Like the one in David Bowie’s Black Star video. I tried to find some images of ancient ones and came across an article with an image of a 41,000 year old Neanderthal woman.
It was in the Daily Galaxy by Chad Cohen:
‘Re-examination of a circa 100,000-year-old archaic early human skull found 35 years ago in Northern China has revealed the surprising presence of an inner-ear formation long thought to occur only in Neanderthals.’
“It suggests, instead, that the later phases of human evolution were more of a labyrinth of biology and peoples than simple lines on maps would suggest.” said study co-author Erik Trinkaus, PhD, a physical anthropology professor at Washington University in St. Louis.
I decided to paint her instead, this Neanderthal woman with her inner ear formation changing the world. Reminds me to listen to my gut.
